Every civilisation I believe has been haunted by some BASIC PROBLEM
around which endless philosophical discussions, ethical problems, have been w.. b.. f...
Solutions of those problems have been incorporated in the institutions of various kind and in a certain sense. Such a basic problem characterize in depth the quality or the character of that particular civilisation or at least is very closely related to that basic character.

Now, take the OLD CHINA for instance.
There the essential concept, the essential problem was that of the ordering of human relationship.
You are there the sky which provide the pattern for all cosmic perfection of relationship and this had to be imprinted forth impress upon the Earth, upon the state, as they call it /?/, through the intermediary of the emperor who serve as it were as a lense through which the rays, the ordered pattern of the sky were to be projected down upon the state. And the problem there to a large extend as it developed at certain time especcially, was how to reconcile the value of individual development and the mystical self-realization and so on with that very intense desire and concern with social order and social institutions.

Take INDIA. There the great, almost would say the great anger of the Indian culture, was the problem of liberation. Every word that you /´ll/ find in the text on the philosophy and the spiritual development deal with the problem of liberation. Liberation from the bondage to instinctual nature of man, liberation from the illusions of ego-consciousness - the Maya, of which you all know about to .../?/ some extend, liberation from ignorance - [Avidia], liberation from suffering -[Duka] as the Buddhist use the term which really dosn´t mean to so much suffering as it means the constant oscilation between pleasure and pain which of course IS the course to some extend of all suffering.

Now - in EUROPE.
The great problem there, which seems to be implied in so much that dealt with the higher form of European culture, was the problem of a freedom of choice. That is to say the ability to use one´s responsibility to make decisions in one life.
Only one life - the Catholic church would tell you, that there was only one life - and in that one life everything depended on that great decision as to whether you were to deal with the law of God as revealed in the Bible /-s?/ or else, if you were going after the pleasure of the flesh of this world, ambition of this world and so on. So that everything depended almost tragically, almost incomprehensibly on that one decision, of course not only one decision, it has to be prolonged decision, but still basically one decision as to whether we would follow one course or another.
